Black Power in Sioux City 1968

Soul on Ice
in my old Buick
tapping at the Remington

young Miss Daniels
checking me absent

term paper
due today
peace and equality
due yesterday

citing sources
The Souls of Black Folks
in the back seat

Black Power:
The Politics of Liberation
on the sun-baked dash

The Strange Career
of Jim Crow
buried under typing paper

Stokely Eldridge W.E.
and the white boy

this white boy
incensed righteous passionate

black is beautiful
asking Jolinda
to the prom

James Brown sliding
across the gym floor
screamin' in my brain

mashin' potatoes
peelin' the banana
doin' the watusi

I knew what was right
and what wasn't
you'd die for that
