"Empty Vessels Make The Most Noise, Perfectly."

#1 Post by meenas17 » 19 May 2016, 20:56

Nine out of ten talk high about them
think they are the finest gems
one such one is Udayappan.
He boasts a lot about his wealth
which would be totally a hundred thousand
He speaks of his capacity in investments
thinks himself to be a Warren Buffet
He talks of Hindu religion, karma and agamam
with such fervour,
and feels he is greater than Swami Vivekananda.
A sixty-two-year-old man talks so childishly.
He is nicknamed as ottapanai.
He fits the idiom, Empty vessels make the most noise, perfectly.

An old man who speaks as a simple child,
nicknamed: ottapanai.

Frank,

It is a simple poem.
Thanks for going through .

People tend to speak highly
never once act shyly
one of a person is Udayappan
who boasts about himself,
his wealth amounts to a total
of one hundred thousand
his skill, one of telling lies
that are blatant and baseless
a small time investor,
all together in thousands
yet, thinks he is India's
Warren Buffet,
elucidates Hindu religion,
explains the agamas and karmas
as though he is one like
Swami Vivekananda.
Well, he is in his sixties
talks with an arrogance
overlapped by ignorance
nicknamed as Ottapanaia : broken pot.

Nine out of ten speak high about them
think they are the finest gems
one such one is Udayappan
who never feels shy to talk about himself
boasts of his wealth
which could be a mere hundred thousand
elaborates his skill in investing
feels he is Indian Buffet
elucidates religion
explains karma and agamas
with fervour, as though he is
greater than Swami Vivekananda.
a spiritual genius with a commanding intellect
Udayappan is in his sixties
speaks with haughtiness
perhaps to hide his cluelessness
nicknamed as ottapanai: broken pot.

I have worked on it. It sounds better.

Hi meenas17,

"Empty vessels make the most noise, perfectly"

^^ been a while since I heard that - similar is the Polish saying: "The cow which moos a lot gives little milk."

The addition of a pause(the comma) followed with "perfectly," underscores - emphasizes

on the peripheral, I'm prompted to speculate:

when the life has left the body, then is that vessel making the most noise perfectly in that it is the noise of silence - a joyful noise - perfect

workshopping the poem:

Since "Udayappan, The Ottapanai" appear in the text, consider instead in the title space, the idiom:

" Empty vessels make the most noise, perfectly."

^^ then the poem is a specific characterization of that saying

" Empty vessels make the most noise, perfectly.

Nine out of ten speak highly of them,
think they are the finest gems,
such a character is Udayappan.

who boasts about his wealth
that amounts to a mere hundred thousand,
elaborating his entrepreneurial skills -
fancies himself an the Warren Buffet of India
He talks of religion, karma and agamam with fervour,
He feels he is greater than Swami Vivekananda.
Just an old man nicknamed ottapanai,
who should be seen and not heard

Hi meenas17,

working further with that draft   --- michael (MV)

"Empty vessels make the most noise, perfectly."

Nine out of ten speak highly of themselves,
convinced they are flawless gems -
indeed such a character is Udayappan,

always boasting about his wealth
that amounts to a mere hundred thousand,
elaborating on his entrepreneurial skills -
fancies himself the Warren Buffet of India.

A crackpot believing he possesses a stronger spiritual genius
and more commanding intellect than Swami Vivekananda,
Udayappan preaches on religion, karma and agamam with fervour.

An old man still nicknamed ottapanai,
talking with an arrogance
overlapped by ignorance -

and children should seen and not heard.

Frank,
I think the other way.
The poem has come a long way largely due to your efforts and workshopping.
Each one has a different perception. So do all of us, Michael, Frank and me.
You worked with me with patience and gave a shape to my thoughts, not only in this one alone but in other poems as well.
Mathew is fine tuning it.
Thanks, Frank.
