Dress Code

#1 Post by SivaRamanathan » 04 Jun 2016, 20:15

My mother had a yardstick for my skirt
it had to be three inches below knee

I raised the waist.
it became two inches above knees.

I refused the long skirt
after that also half the sari.

In pre-degree they made me two bell bottoms;
trousers were tight and flared up like elephant ears at the bottom.

I didn't feel at all comfortable. In fact I could not even run.

We listened to music on the radio
AIR All India Radio

tuned the Open Forum
to listen to our favourite numbers.

This was in the 70's not 90's.
We read Bob Dylan.

Earlier to that we had Hare Rama Hare Krishna
in a trance singing and swallowing smoke.

Dad explained that Pop music was popular music
no harm in listening to music in any form.

The simple, conversational language is a joy. But I don't think the poem has found an ending yet that is as good as the rest of the poem. Keep working on it. The opening three stanzas are stellar. They set the tone and subject. 'We read Bob Dylan' is a great line.
