The Religion of Cats

#1 Post by Kenneth2816 » 16 Sep 2019, 15:37

For no other reason than
I awoke with a stir
from a sound sleep at 3 A.M.
in the Goddamn morning,

Jasper and Boaz reject
their own ideology,
abandon the scratch post
just to be in My presence.

They push their faces so close
to mine I can feel the small
breath dissipate against
the sensitivity of my upper lip.

They have come to sit Shiva,
mourn the memory
of my frail ambitions
offering their bodies as sacrifice.

There is warmth to be siphoned,
the comfort of a soft coat to
stroke and knead, ears for twizzling,
proving above all else, God is tactile.

If I could be a friend like that,
If I could practice the religion of cats.

Beautiful...great ending. I love cats and I love this poem. It needs a good home.

I like the poem, but I am not sure you need the last two lines.
