A Letter To My Future Wife

If I were handsome,
and a show off, confident
like a frigate bird
perched on a flowering balcony,
my red sac swelling for you,
could you fall for me?

Imagine if I were humble,
a hard working,
dusky-footed woodrat...

For you I would build a lodge--
with living quarters, a nest
for a nursery,
rooms in the upper floors
for guests.

You're right.
You have too much integrity
to be drawn to me merely
by what's practical

or even by a home shining
with art collections--
gum wrappers, new nails, coins,
silverware, bits of jewelry...

Ah, but know this...
if we were seahorses
I would hold open
only for you
my empty pouch--

waiting, like my heart,
to be filled.

We did a poem in school--If I were Lord of Tartary. This reminds me of that.

Much to like about this Bob, though it lacks the punch of many other of your poems. It's wistful and endearing

That’s true, Ken. Thank you.
