The Letter Got There Too Late

I’m the half a loaf girl
who settled for what she could get
instead of waiting for what she wanted
the girl you took home
when nobody was home
and your wife was out of town
or the one you visited
when you had a fight and she kicked you out
The only movies I ever saw
were the ones by the lights
on the dashboard
we ate store bought sandwiches
in motel rooms,
and cheap wine out of the bottle
because all your money
went for the room
and we couldn't be seen in public
your wife was the girl I went to school with
I see her now and then
in the store
and we spend all our time
ducking each other
in every aisle
and when you died
I read it in the paper
couldn't even call her up
to say how sorry I was
no funeral, no flowers, no card
and the only grief
in the dark
into the pillow
that still smells like you

When I read the first line, I didn’t think it was going to be a very good poem. Wow, was I totally wrong. One of the best poems I’ve read in a while.
