The Way Of Coyote
He lopes through the marsh
to the edge of a neighborhood,
crosses an open field of stubble
like an illegal immigrant, tail
down, head low, sweeping side
to side, wary, halting and crouching
at any noise. Middle of the day,
a daring venture for what purpose?
New territory where he's not known,
has no reputation, yet. How many
times have I attempted to start anew,
leaving the booze and pipes behind.
No cool to live up to. No so-called
friends knockin' at my door. Alone.
Walkin' on the curb, hands in pockets,
looking away when I feel them looking.

Re: In The Way Of The Coyote
This is so good! I love the analogy being drawn between coyote and the narrator. Great last line.
Looking away when I felt them looking.
Looking away when I felt them looking.

Very neat and structured poem Billy. Cannot think of anything that is not appropriate.
