Upcoming July IBPC 2016:
any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!
and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules
In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.
Poems selected to represent the Block are posted here in this thread, along with all IBPC required info.
When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,
along with all the info needed by each author:
1/Your name
2/e-mail address
3/statement that the poem is your original
4/and unpublished work
5/and that you are not representing in the current IBPC
6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.
^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.
I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.
Please reply - accept or decline - in this thread.
Thanks,
Michael (MV)

Re: Upcoming July IBPC 2016:
You have worked so hard this month Meenas
it has been my pleasure to nominate your fine poem
so positive in your approach
so humble to allow peasants to tear your work apart
I am sure Michael agrees the poem has merit.

Re: Upcoming July IBPC 2016:
Please note these are MV's nominations; a decision on a final 3 will be soon - hopefully in light of voicing by fellow-poets here at the WB.
And Please note the nomination process is open, too, to fellow-poets here at the WB.
I'm nominating Billy's Echocardiogram in poetry
Also, I believe a poem by Bob could represent for the Writer's Block:
Looking Back at the Night Van Gogh Shot Himself
or
Beethoven's Embrace
A poem by Bob would allow the WB a fresh contender.
In this monthly IBPC thread, nominated poets let us know if they are interested and/or available; or not interested and/or not available.

Re: Upcoming July IBPC 2016:
I'm not wanting Seceded to go through,
it was a spontaneous poem written in haste
and to my mind not of the required standard
for the IBPC, I would like to be remembered
for poems that have more gravitas than that.
However. . .

Thanks, Frank, for the prompt response. I understand.
Also, I read in this thread that you have nominated Meena's poem Arockiyam - my Driver; and that Meena is "overwhelmed."
Thanks for voicing a nomination.

Bob,
of the 2 which is your preference?
Looking Back at the Night Van Gogh Shot Himself
or
Beethoven's Embrace
I'm assuming that you have read the rules/guidelines in the initial entry of this thread,
and that you don't already have a poem representing for another board this upcoming July IBPC.
I mention this to you b/c, as far as iI know, you are new to the process/procedure, etc..
Thanks, Bob, for understanding, and for your interest in representing the WB.
Also, Thanks for sharing your workshopping. Along with your poetry, it is a refreshing contribution to the WB community.

Re: Upcoming July IBPC 2016:
I have to pull this poem. I nominate Siva's poem Mother in Her Old Age, if she can explain to me the "3" in the title and the line "3 sixty five". Is that supposed to mean three hundred sixty five days.

A question....how does one normally find the upcoming ibpc nominations page? You gave me a link for this month, but I wouldn't know where to look for the next month's.
Thx, Bob

Hi Bob,
Yes, I understood.
After an author chosen to represent has made any edits, etc.,
then the author posts in this thread the version of the poem
- in your case, Bob, Beethoven's Embrace -
as the author would like it forwarded to the finals.
Thanks, Bob.
in the spirit of clarification

6/and the poem: Retrospecting
Born to parents
well-educated and well-placed,
I had the best of all.
Orthodoxy and discipline
overwhelmed that part
of my early life.
Arockiyam, our old driver,
would drive through the busy roads,
negotiate the heavy traffic and
take me safely to school in the mornings,
to the music master's house in the afternoons
and to the dance class in the evenings.
He monitored my every move
reporting each mistake discreetly to my mom
saying: "Amma, correct,thangachi.
Enraged, mother once began
to give me a thorough thrashing.
Arockiyam rushed to my rescue;
lifted me, wiped my tears
and pacified me gently.
In my young confusion
about his switch to consoler,
I yelled at Arockiyam,
"Die and go to hell."
When I remember the old
man and his care,
I recant my curse, too;
and silently, as if in prayer,
I cry.

Re: Upcoming July IBPC 2016:
Thak you for suggesting my poem Hausa Girl to represent the block Michael
I would be honoured to represent the block this July 2016 - Ieuan ap Hywel
1. Ieuan ap Hywel
2. e-mail address - ieuanaphywel@aol.com
3. This is my own original work
4. this is an unpublished work
5. I am not representing any other board/forum in the current IBPC
6. yes, please forward the poem as follows:
Hausa Girl
. . . any mans death diminishes me, because I am
involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to
know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee....'
John Donn 1624
Meditation 17 - Devotions upon Emergent Occasions
Whenever he thinks back to the Hausa girl he starts with
the tin dory, the outboard has stalled and he's drifting out
of the Delta. Breakers chop at the boat, dash spray on his face
Further out matchstick figures cast nets from a dozen dugouts,
riding the Atlantic swell with consummate grace. There are
seawater crocs. out there that take great whites, reluctantly he
restarts the outboard and makes his way back through the
mangroves.
His assistant is waiting on the landing,
'Chief's on the blower, you must take your break.'
Christmas at Port Harcourt, he grunts his acquiescence.
He packs his KLM bag and a copy of the drilling log.
Rainy season keeps the sand flies down, but he
sweats from every soggy pore, spends time
reading Time under the air con., the American
press preoccupied with body-counts and Vietcong.
LBJ endorses Kennedy's domino effect. The press
omit to mention: Agent Orange, Rolling Thunder.
He spends time at the Great North Road teashop,
mixing with oil-men and wives, picking up snippets.
A man with opaque eyes walks by every day at four,
deranged and naked, oh howling man if only you
could break your silence. Elephantiasis has swollen
the man’s testicles, they swing in time with his stride.
He learns to develop Kodak TriX at the Shell Club and
swims a little, drinks iced soda water with Angostura
bitters. Valentine, thin happy Ibo servant, makes fine
meals, cleans the flat and filters his drinking water
through crushed charcoal.
Evenings spent: smoking pipe, sipping whisky,
playing records: Satchmo, hymnody, pop.
Aafka hates the music, grates her furniture
around from the flat above.
Riots at the railway station, a train arrives with
refugees from the North; victims and amputees,
bloodied and bandaged from the Kano pogroms.
Ibos go on the rampage.
A Hausa girl runs past the flats, skirt hitched. A
slash of a panga cuts her from clavicle to navel,
her breast unfolds. He runs down to help.
Her attackers laugh from the bushes as she cries:
'Uwar!' for her mother. Her breasts proud with
milk, her musk mixing with the smell of blood.
He cradles her head as life ebbs away. A magazine
perfume sample peels off from inside her jumper.
She whispers the name of her god. Her eyes melt
like a blood red sunset.
End.
