Upcoming February IBPC 2021:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 28 Jan 2021, 06:07

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Michael (MV)

Thanks, Billy. I accept,

This poem is mine, unpublished and not represented in any other forum.

Boketto

I’m exhausted by the world,
a barroom brawl,
behind me the world
being swept up.

Outside the window I sit at
people stream by like a traffic
of fish in an aquarium.
But I don’t see them.

I’m looking beyond them.
A drink appears in my
peripheral vision, the table
slightly wet as if the drink

has been perspiring.
My father would tell you
I’m a master at boketto.
He says he couldn’t

reach me with a megaphone.
“Where’s your ambition, boy?
If you were a dog
you wouldn’t fetch

a stick. What's the world to you?
A class you sit in on.
You’ll never graduate
or learn job skills.”

I wasn’t listening.
I was staring into space,
the world waiting like a lover
I hadn’t met yet, and as lovely

as the ruffles of daffodils,
or sunlight, or rough waves scrambling
up rocks like wildebeest
up muddy banks.

Or like the approach
of a long-haired comet.
Or a lover’s hand that presses
softly against my chest

to quiet me, my future
somewhere in the distance,
my heart settling like a
stirred drink. Boketto.

These two poems have been nominated. I’ll go with whichever one you guys choose.

Hollyhocks

I remember beauty mixed
with ugliness. Hollyhocks

growing in cinders in the alley.
The flowers grow hair

like the hairs in an old man's ear.
A totem of old men's ears

on a thick stalk, a talisman
of shrunken heads. Beside

a rickety, rotting shed
they loiter like freaks hiding

from sight, from judgmental
stares of people with gardens

of prize-winning roses
and chrysanthemums.

When I was 6 or 7 walking
home from school I stuck

to the alleys. A little fear mixed
with adventure. Hollyhocks

watching over me, listening,
showing me how to hide.

Grater

There wasn't no warnin',
just a slap 'cross the face,
but I learnt ta feel it
comin' the way I knew
a wiseacre was starin'

at me in a public place,
thinkin' hateful about me.
I went on cuz I knew two
wrongs didn't make no
right, so that's what

I done, hands clenched
in my pockets, mama
in my mind holdin' my
tears back like bullets
'n knives gonna riddle

my body with holes. Later,
I drug a slab of cheese
'cross a grater, bloodied
knuckles, shreddin' til nothin'
was left but a plowed pulp.

Modern Pharmacopeia

I take a lexicon of pills
with names that sound
like the secret incantation
for summoning Beelzebul:

They keep the wheels
and dials inside my head
humming and the tubes
from over amping.

Zyprexa Celexa Latuda Effexor.

O come now Dark Lord
and devourest mine enemies.

Original unpublished work, I'm not representing elsewhere.

Update 2/5 re Upcoming February IBPC 2021:

#11 Post by Michael (MV) » 05 Feb 2021, 17:15

Although I am not as verbal as usual & as I would like to be, I am reading & paying attention, and 3 will be sent in, hopefully today.

I had hoped to voice this earlier, but I am very busy at the hospital as a needed caregiver:

I'm 2nding Billy's Hollyhocks. I see he has accepted for either Hollyhocks or Grater. Later, probably to move forward, he has singled out Grater, and if he prefers, I will gladly forward that poem.

But, now that Hollyhock has received on 2/5 another vote, I hope to hear from Billy ASAP in this thread letting me definitively which one of the 2. Thanks, Billy.

The other 2 of our 3 are:

Ken's Modern Pharmacopeia

and

Bob's Boketto

A safe & wonderful weekend to every one
