Train At Three Levels

#1 Post by SivaRamanathan » 05 Sep 2012, 21:01

Edit-5

Train At Three Levels

the first 'thrain' lisped from your stories, how
as a child you enlarged two anna coins on the tracks
with the weight of the Salem Express
then tossed into the pulp of the Cauvery
for the peace of your ancestors;
the poet in me borrowed it and I made it all mine

as a young girl I remember the Western ghats,
tunnels of frightful fun, elephants at work at Punalur,
a wish to fall into lily ponds, endless backwaters
making me wonder how they built those bridges
did the water come first or did it collect after the clouds let drop?

at twenty the train meant travelling into womanhood,
two girls and eleven boys we were discovering our skin
and the power of touch, with a group leader
(busy taking care of himself.)

when my daughter was a baby,
the train was a connecting link
to my parental home; my father carrying her
on his shoulders walking the coaches to make her breathe easy,
living in a different waterless state
and leaving me always almost home-sick.

now the train journey leading me to only think of afterlife.

now the train journey reminds me of after life.

Train At Three Levels

the first thrain I lisped was you, your stories, how

you as a child enlarged two anna coins with the weight of the Salem Express

the poet in me cheated and I made it mine

my imagination talking about the enlarged polo mint hole.

as a young girl I remember the Western ghats , tunnels of fright

elephants at Punalur, a wish to fall into the lily pond

endless backwater making me wonder how they built bridges

did the water come first or did it collect after the clouds let drop?

at twenty the train meant travelling into womanhood, discovering

relationships that would take me to a different district with a gang of boys

and a group leader.

when my daughter was a baby, my father would carry her on his shoulders

making her breathe easy, I was always almost home-sick.

now the train journey remind me of after life.
