Nostalgia

#1 Post by SivaRamanathan » 20 Oct 2013, 19:17

Let us deal with the nose first.
It remembers the Vicks Vapour Rub inhaler
connects it with my father, the Wills cigarette
smoke to my mother.

The eyes remember idyllic lotus beauty
over the years from infancy, after which
beauty was anything I noticed, even concrete.

The ears could see, tuned to vibrations
of the slithering snake or the padded paws;
images built up and with a little juggling,
became poems.

The tongue remembers native candy then Cadburys
country ghee and crooked green tamarind pods
the taste of saliva and several other adult tastes.

The nostalgia of love is beyond the skin
where to feel became’ to fall in and out of love;
they remain in the top drawer of my heart
as love letters.

Siva, I like this list poem that really isn't a list. I like your poems with all their cultural images, but this one is more immediately accessible without googling. I'm not sure about this line: "the taste of saliva and several other adult tastes." I think I want what those adult tastes are. But I also like the subtle intimation of something possibly erotic. Maybe your last stanza is too telly.

Good poem.

Hi Siva,

for now:

Nostalgia : a return to a paradise lost ("He leaves the fold for one")

^^ and thus, I find this poem appealing.

How about we ready-it for the upcoming IBPC;

that is, of course, if you don't already have a poem representing another board.

I'll be returning to comment & workshop, more.

Canine keen, the nose knows first -
remembers the vapor rub
from father's Vicks inhaler,
and in a puff, the scent of
of mother's Wills.

You see it really doesn't matter
when you're buried in disguise
by the dark glass on your eyes,
though your flesh has crystalised;
Still .... you turn me on.
              -- lyric from Greg Lake of Emerson Lake & Palmer

The eyes see again lotus beauty
years from infancy, and then beauty
was anything I looked upon, even the invisible.

or maybe:

was anything I looked upon, even the unseen.

Ultrasonic hearing detects vibrations
of the slithering snake and the padded paws;

re:

"images built up and with a little juggling,
became poems."

^^ not sure if needed; if so maybe elsewhere in the poem,

maybe in the last stanza; not sure

In general, your nostalgia recalls to me William Wordsworth's Ode: Intimations of Immortality:

"There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,
The earth, and every common sight,
To me did seem
Apparelled in celestial light,
The glory and the freshness of a dream."

Hi Siva,

continuing w/ stanza 4:

The tongue touches the taste of native
candy, then Cadburys, country ghee and crooked green
tamarind pods, and the buds salivate
like the first time.

Then the extra sensory oversees
all these impressions into
song, dance, painting, sculture:
poetry with voice & vision.

The linger of love rises beyond the senses
the rhythm of falling in and out
resonates in the upper chamber of my heart
as love letters pulsating in the top drawer.
