The Cherokee say there's a passage
through Looking Glass Rock where
some of these ancestors escaped
The Trail of Years when the Army
came in the Winter of 1830.
Their god Judaculla promised to
keep them safe if they resisted
and went below .. He made the earth
heat up under them, sent fowl
and deer into the caverns they
slaughtered for food. After six
. months most of the tribe was
captured and forced to Oklahoma.
Except for the Remnant Judaculla
swore to leave on ancestral lands.
The government made a pact that
they and their descendants could
live on the Cherokee reservation
and Judaculla told them as long
as they stayed in the midst of
The Great Smoky Mountains
and upheld righteousness they.
would be safe and prosper.
There are two tribes today. The Oklahoma
faction is called the Cherokee Nation
and the Eastern Band who are
descendants of those who stayed.
.
It's the only treaty with the Cherokee
the United States Government kept.

Legend of Looking Glass Rock
Re: Legend of Looking Glass Rock
Great, sad, and powerful story. I was married to an Arapaho woman on the Wind River Rez in Wyoming. I was a elementary school nurse for 600 Dine(Navajo) children in Arizona. They called me Mr. Nurse.
