Do You Know the Way
What’s the name of Dionne Warwick’s
biggest hit song, and who
was its famous songwriter?
I’m as close to remembering it
as I am to a sticker on a bumper
mere feet from mine as I cross
under the highway sign
that reads 10 miles to Winchester Blvd.
Just as I am about to recall
who sang it
I think of other hit songs
by that singer ... what’s her name….
“Walk on By”…the guy’s name
who wrote it starts with a B…
Bert, maybe, Brian…definitely a B…
You know the feeling…like calling
a phone number over and over
but no one picks up. Or maybe
the inbox fills up and won’t
accept messages.
Memory loss… It’s like hearing footsteps
approach my front door. When I open it
there’s no one there, as if someone
changed their mind, retreating
at the last second.
The names of hit songs
have slipped away, like mist
into a cloud of fog ahead—my headlights
probing it as the traffic thins.
Oh, yeah, Dionne Warwick
sang that song by Burt
Bacharach. I take the wheel
more firmly as if grabbing my son
by the shoulders. I start to sing
as my car slips under a sign
"5 miles to San Jose”.

The lighter side of memory loss
The hair loses its color;
The mind, it's memory:
Gray mind under gray hair
