It's Time, Darling

#1 Post by BobBradshaw » 07 Dec 2021, 02:17

It's Time, Darling

“Why are you so grumpy?” my wife asks.
“Is it because we missed our date?”
No, of course not. Maybe it's the weather...

All week the sun’s been veiled in gauze
as if he was in a wreck,
a car left smoldering by the tracks.

Yet despite the ups and downs
he’s carried on for 4 1/2 billion years.
How long have we been married?

The decades, though memorable,
have flown by like hats in a gale.
We need to reset our watches.

Just 19 hours ago, the planet
first saw stars awash on its waves.
90 minutes ago a froth of bubbles

eyed the skies for the first time.
7 minutes ago our ancestors risked
the footing of branches.

You’re right, darling. There’s no time
to be grumpy. Or to wait.
Already an archaeologist,

as white-haired as the moon,
is scraping through tons of decayed pines
--wedging off our roof's tiles:

our child having died
thousands of years
ago.

Note: The core of this poem was published decades ago. But I have significantly enhanced it, approximately doubling its size...lol...usually I advise trim, trim, trim!

I'm not a fan of trim,
it goes against my grain.
I think you have it just right.
