Elvis Sightings
My best friend Gail saw Elvis
hanging around Guitar Center,
strumming a song to strangers
when a string broke,
sending a loud twang
throughout the store.
Lily Lee saw The King
cruising up to her on I-24
in a Mercedes, waving
his honorary FBI badge at her
to pull over for speeding--
only to whiz by
as she eased off onto the shoulder.
Elvis...always the kidder.
How many sightings have there been
by tourists at Graceland
who have glimpsed Elvis
peering around columns,
eavesdropping, trying
to snap photos of them?
I think of his bloated body,
fallen off the toilet, curled up
on the floor. How could
the king of heartthrobs,
who could have loved any woman,
seek refuge in drugs?
And how many Cadillacs over the years
did he give away to "friends"?
My heart goes out to him,
alone, his car’s blue light flashing—
and him waving his badge at a stranger
to pull over, to talk awhile,
his own life horribly
stalled.

Re: Elvis Sightings
Poignant.
Starts off so lightly and with joy
Didn't we all love him.
And then the death knell
We all suspected he was on drugs
Loved his mother
could not live without that stability to steady his fall
I tried the same with my Dylan Thomas poem
but I was too long, you cut to the quick
and still got your message over very neatly.
I think I will go back and tinker my Dylan Thomas Poem,
thanks for the encouragement to experiment.
well done.
Gets a nomination from me.
