Meeting Kate
You changed everything.
You handed back my self esteem
like a coat girl returning
my warm coat on a winter night.
Decades later, we look
like any old couple.
Even now when one turns over
in bed the other one follows.
If you were lost
I’d be inconsolable.
I'd feel like any husband in a long marriage,
the other side of the bed empty.
Who can replace a lifelong companion?
I look at you, and wonder
who between us will go first?
note: This is an old poem, which I've revised
