Will

Anne sailed into my summer
like a ship loaded
with spices.

Her blonde hair an ode
to sunlight, her breasts
as boldly pushed out

ahead of her
as a vessel’s figurehead,
I was awash in love's wake.

I tutored but 'twas Anne took me
under her wing and schooled me
in more than kisses.

Her sea wall breached,
the afternoons were flooded
with vows.

“Is this what you teach
thy lads, tutor?” she teased.
“Ought you to teach Latin and Greek?”

No, I answered, for I dub thy breasts
Greek and Latin. Much time
’twill be spent on lessons

with my favorite, Latin.
“And less," she jousted,
"on Greek?” I shrugged.

She could not write
yet her wit flashed
like sun bursts through muddy clouds.

All summer my cock lived
like spring days—quick to rise
and growing longer

but by summer’s end
another Anne had entered my heart
and quietly I slipped

from milady’s moorings,
never meaning to see her again.

After all, a young man’s pledges...
are they not accepted
to be like toasts

lifted in an alehouse--
meant in good faith
but momentarily
raised?

Note: this is the opening poem in a series of Shakespeare poems that I am currently working on.
