Upcoming July IBPC 2022:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 29 Jun 2022, 22:11

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Michael (MV)

The poem is original, unpublished…I am not representing another forum.

Li Po, Adrift

I row alone through these canyons
where dragons sleep in purling rivers.

Hummingbirds drain the last nectar
from a muddy branch’s blossoms.

It's the end of autumn and an early snow
flies in as cranes fly off over Wu Shan.

How quickly sixty years pass!

Draining a tankard of wine, adrift,
I grow content with the world's beauty,
no longer laboring at the oars.

This is my original and unpublished work
and I am not representing another board

Old Armchair

Leaving the mizzle
I turn Mam’s front door key
into emptiness -

step into her parlour,
gold velour drapes the window bay;
keepsakes scatter any gloom

and past guests brush by
for tea and cakes, gossip
stirred with laughter.

Now a silence overwhelms,
like that moment she mistook
a neighbour for Uncle Ray.

I take down her adored water
colours, pack memories
into boxes. China ladies swim

with glass fish, grandparents
smiling from embossed albums.
I polish the sixties stereogram

until it gleams and still her armchair,
reupholstered in olive brocade,
the suite’s sole survivor, stands

by the window, dusty
and frayed, swallowing me
into reveries –

Kisses on the sofa, open mouths
trembling, parents watch
Bonanza - volume turned up.

I squeeze Dad’s hand, nerves
gnawing - the wedding car is late
and it’s starting to rain.

Nursing my boys, I inhale
baby scents, humming along to
‘All I Have to do is Dream’.

Over-feasted on Boxing Days,
we gather in the mellow atmosphere.
sipping snifters of brandy.

Cardigan inside out, Mam waits
for the doctor, her bible upside down,
unsweetened tea half drunk and cold.

I reach for her photo, taken last year,
snuggle into time-worn arms,
whisper goodbye as she fades -

outside the clouds open.
Releasing a deluge, I hear her-
It’s only a chair love.

So glad you are ok Michael.

Just noticed that I accidentally missed out St4 from my poem which was quite an important verse. I have added it in now but think I am too late - you must have sent them off by now? :( I suppose there's no chance to change it now?

The 3 were launched the afternoon of Wednesday July 6th

#18 Post by Michael (MV) » 08 Jul 2022, 03:13

Hi Eira,

Long narrative in short form:

Fortunately, my itinerary was modified Tuesday afternoon, starting with a phone call from the doctor, as I was leaving the drive from home.

Thus, it became Wednesday afternoon before I launched the 3 to the finals.

Good Luck to the Writer's Block
