Upcoming May IBPC 2022:

#1 Post by Michael (MV) » 30 Apr 2022, 07:01

Voice your recommendation(s) here, and

Please let us know ASAP if you are not going to be available to represent the Writer's Block -

then we will know not to consider your poems further for this month's IBPC.

I/we will be looking for consensus - in keeping with a communal workshop environment

Which 1-3 would we like to see represent the Writer's Block in the finals?

After the 3 are selected, then will each author post - in this thread - the poem as the poet would like it forwarded,

and ALL the needed info/statements

Ideally, the only poems that really need to appear here are the final 3, when announced, hopefully by the 1st of the month, if not sooner

^^ the intent is organizational - if poems appear here before the selection of the final 3, then there is a congestion -

Until the final 3 are announced, please maintain poems & workshopping to the Workshop Forum. Thanks.

************

any newcomers or returnees this month, Welcome!

and here is a home link to the IBPC rules: http://ibpc.webdelsol.com/rules

In this thread, from the poems posted in the workshop forum during the course of the month, recommend/nominate by title & author.

Nominated poets, please acknowledge the nomination here in this thread.
Please reply by accepting or declining the nomination - in this thread.

Please note & observe: This is not a workshopping thread.

In this thread, poems that are ultimately selected to represent the Block are then posted here
as the author would like for the poem to be forwarded
along with all IBPC required info.

When the 1-3 poems are decided upon, and permission granted by each author of the selected poems,

along with all the info needed by each author:

1/Your name

2/e-mail address

3/statement that the poem is your original

4/and unpublished work

5/and that you don't have a poem committed to represent another board in the current IBPC. One poet one poem one board
for each monthly,

6/and the poem as you would like it forwarded to the finals.

^^ All of the above is the usual needed info as part of the process.

I will then forward the 1-3 to the IBPC finals.

Thanks

Michael (MV)

The Cannoneer

At the American Legion there's
a WWII field artillery piece, its
tripod sprawled on white gravel
like a Grandaddy Long Legs.

When I was a kid, we held dances
there and I was in love with Mary
Alice Paxton, but when I asked her
to dance, she smiled and walked off.

They keep it greased and calibrated.
All the wheels and levers work, but
the breech and is welded shut. With
windage and elevation, the range

is three to five miles, enough to
drop a shell on Wal Mart, the roof
of the County Jail, or the all-night
Quick Mart on the truck route.

Some times late at night, I take
what's left of a bottle of Dewar's,
ease into the operator's seat, work
all the dials, rain Hell down all over,

making bomb noises with my mouth
crying a little and muttering beneath
my whiskey-breath, " Damn you
Mary Alice." They ain't caught me yet.

Phone Of The Wind

The “phone of the wind”,
as the Otsuchi phone booth is called,
is a leftover relic of the 1960s,

a white phone booth
with its rotary phone.
Sometimes lines of the grieving,

hearts wrecked, queue up to use it.
Where else can you call
a dead loved one?

There’s something acceptable
in Japan about reaching out
to one’s past—parents, child,

a former lover, your voice trembling
over an unconnected line.
“Mom, is that you?”

When Dad lay dying,
unresponsive, his doctors insisted
he didn’t know we were there.

Once he gripped my finger
when I asked Can you hear me?
“A muscular reaction. That’s all.”

a physician assured me.
To her my father would always
remain a missed call.

Sometimes in my hotel room
late at night I wake up
to Otsuchi’s phone, ringing.

I gaze through my bedroom window
half expecting to see
a white shadow on the lawn.

Here in Japan I don’t hesitate
to reach out, to call. “Yes, yes
I miss you, Dad…”

I missed an opportunity
when he lay dying in a sterile room.

I’ll be damned if I’ll miss a chance
to connect with him again.

Please Note this thread, and Update re Upcoming May IBPC 2022:

#12 Post by Michael (MV) » 02 May 2022, 19:20

Please note:

The only poems that should be physically posted in the monthly IBPC thread are the poems that have been official selected to go forward.

In this case, for this current IBPC, that would so far be Bob's poem and Kenneth's poem - and both have followed through by posting their Selected poems and the needed info.

Thanks Kenneth and Bob, and good luck in the final.

Let's decide the 3rd by the 3rd of May.

Thanks,

Michael (MV)

Diptych - Ekphrastic

Ukraine war: World Health Organisation says attacks on health facilities are rising daily - BBC News
By Jim Reed - Health reporter - Published 26 March 2022

I'm visiting Mam at Caerdydd
University Hospital. She's been
a patient ever since Dad slipped away
into dementia. She talks about her stones
among a tangle of tubes. It eases her pain
to relate her life-story again. Opposite,
an old lady, with white candy-floss hair,
bobs and beams, talking non-stop.
Her son, sits listening dutifully,
his mind on Sunday's sermon.
A nurse tells me he's Presbyterian,
as if to explain his embarrassment
at his mother's obvious devotion.

I watch the TV news as Mam dozes off.
‘We’ll keep going,’ a nurse tells a BBC's reporter,
'Until everything runs out, until the enemy arrives.'
A bandaged combatant writhes in pain, his jerky
movements at every sound suggests shell-shock.
Other patients tremble at the crump of mortars
in the distance. Doctors, pass-by, feigning detachment,
nerves taut, stretched to the limit like razor-wire.
Ambulances, vans, and cars continue to unburden
their cares into corridors stained
red like a Boca Ciega Bay tide.

End

I withdraw my poem from the competition for this month.
There is no indication that it has been selected and Michael's
poem has received more votes and so it is only fair his goes
forward. I hope this hasn't caused any problems.

Best wishes for the three that go forward.
